“People who say ‘cheat’ and ‘ugh’ are just brain-dead headline followers.”
dr Disrespect is bolstering blockchain gaming, despite the overwhelmingly negative reception to the technology and the ongoing backlash from much of its fan base. The streamer is best known for his outspoken personality and bombastic appearances on Twitch and YouTube, especially while playing popular battle royale games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and various entries in the Call of Duty series.
The streamer was banned from Twitch on June 26, 2020. The platform did not provide any information about the blocking and only pointed out a violation of its terms of use. dr Disrespect claimed at the time it didn’t know why, but announced on August 23, 2021 that it had known the reason for months and would be taking legal action. dr Disrespect and Twitch announced a settlement of the dispute on March 10, 2022. dr Disrespect further said that he will not be returning to Twitch after successfully migrating to YouTube and reaching over 4 million subscribers on the platform as of December 31st. 2022.
dr Disrespect announced the launch of its Triple-A gaming studio, Midnight Society, during its dispute with Twitch in December 2021. Midnight Society is primarily focused on developing online multiplayer games with blockchain integration, the current priority of the Project Moon studio, drawing widespread criticism for its implementation of NFTs. “Midnight Society is a new breed of triple-A game studio and publishing model that’s been in development for over a decade,” reads the official description. “We are a group of ambitious games industry veterans who see a future where developers no longer create experiences in a vacuum and players participate in the success of a game.”
The content creator previously became the target of backlash from fans and followers for promoting a variety of different blockchain games both on stream and on social media. Many accused the streamer of promoting a product they believed was harmful to the environment and could exacerbate wealth inequality in the gaming community. This prompted the content creator to put some distance between itself and technology, at least for a while. dr Disrespect recently posted on Twitter about the topic, calling blockchain gaming the way of the future.
“Imagine trying to ‘extract’ with an item you discovered in the $100,000 chain,” said Dr. Disrespect on Twitter. “Think of the entertainment value as a viewer, let alone as a player.” The content creator went on to say that “a new PvP experience is upon us.” dr Disrespect later explained how “the concept of digital collectibles in an online game is so exciting to me. Especially an extraction game. People who say “cheat” and “ugh” are just brain-dead headline followers. The same people who spend a ton on skins for an annual game. The same skins everyone has.”
The technology briefly gained significant popularity in the gaming industry due to its potential to enable safer and more transparent transactions and item ownership. However, many soon became critical of blockchain games, raising concerns about their potential environmental impact, among other things.
Recent comments from Dr. Disrespect received a mixed reception from the gaming community, with some of its fans expressing support for the streamer. The majority of his followers, on the other hand, are apparently still skeptical about the matter. “NFTs are a scam,” noted one fan on Twitter, for example. “Good luck, but I feel like this is a rocky road.”
