The Diablo IV open beta is upon us, and a new live-action commercial shows just how committed developer Blizzard is to delivering on the game’s promise of making the upcoming ARPG look like a Gothic-era painting and let it feel
The ad, narrated by actor Charles Dance (perhaps best known for his role as Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones), features an epic mural on the ceiling of a real cathedral depicting the battle between the forces of good and the great of Diablo IV – Evil demon, Lilith.
It is an awe-inspiring sight and required 2,400 square feet of canvas, which was later attached to the ceiling and dome of the Chapelle des Jesuits Cathedral in Cambrai, France. The mural is the work of Baroque artist Adam Miller and others and features 20 unique paintings that combine to form a 160-foot mural.
“They wanted something in the baroque style, and the scale and speed of it seemed a little crazy, so I thought let’s give it a try,” Miller said in a behind-the-scenes video.
Diablo IV art director John Mueller said the main goal is to create some “epic scale” that “thinks back to the time of Michelangelo and Davinci and those old masters who defined a generation of art.
Players who reach level 25 in the upcoming Diablo IV Open Beta and register for a sweepstakes will be able to put their face on the mural that will be “forever glorified among the sacred heroes of Sanctuary.”
An Early Access beta for those who pre-order Diablo IV will run from March 17th to 19th, followed by an open beta phase from March 24th to 26th. The beta includes the entire first act of the game and a max level of 25. Players who reach certain milestones in the beta will unlock unique titles and a wolf pup backpack in the full game of Diablo IV, which will be released in June and September 2023 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC.
