Florence Pugh will star in Zach Braff’s new indie A Good Person. Written especially for her, it stars Allison, a young woman coming to terms with grief after an unimaginable tragedy. However, Pugh reveals it in the new issue of Total Film magazine (opens in new tab), with Renfield on the cover, that she was told she would never be cast in an indie film again after joining Marvel. Pugh plays Yelena Belova in the MCU, who appeared in Black Widow, Hawkeye and will star in the upcoming Thunderbolts.
“When I first signed on to Marvel, a lot of people in the indie film world told me I would never go back to small films, and that always kind of teased me,” she explains to Total Film (opens in new tab). “Because I think there’s beauty in all kinds of these films. There’s beauty in the massive, epic storylines like Dune, like Marvel, like even Oppenheimer, which I did. They are amazing mega movies. And then there’s also beauty in all those ‘little ones’ that not everyone will see, but will affect the right person at the right time. I never, ever just thought that I would only do one type of film. I have always known that I want to try myself in all areas.”
She adds: “It’s also good for my brain to dabble in all areas. I would like to direct. I know how important it is to have a good dialogue with your director. I know how important it is. And I just feel like you.” I can’t just throw myself at it and hope the spaghetti sticks. I need to learn a little bit more and understand why things are going where (they do) and really watch all these people that I’ve been watching.
“But I personally would be too scared of accidentally saying the wrong thing or accidentally screwing up someone’s day because I said, ‘Maybe not like that.’ I don’t know it. All the things I’ve personally felt while acting before. I think it will probably take me a few more years to practice the talent of leading a ship into a storm and pretending everything is fine. But I would like to one day.”
