Spain’s parliament has passed a new transgender law that could allow children as young as 12 to legally change their gender. The Conservatives have vowed to repeal the law.
Spain’s Congress this week passed the controversial trans law, backed by Equality Minister Irene Montero, giving anyone over the age of 16 the ability to legally change their gender with a simple request.
The new law allows children as young as 12 to change their gender on official documents with the approval of a judge, and children between the ages of 14 and 16 to change their gender with the consent of their parents or guardian. El Mundo reports.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the supposedly right-wing People’s Party (PP), announced his party would work to repeal the law if it is elected to form a government in the next general election, due later this December.
The PP particularly denies the fact that minors over 16 can now change their gender without needing parental permission, saying the new law will have harmful consequences.
Feijóo also said he will reverse the amendments to the abortion law that allow minors to request abortions without parental permission, and that he will seek to reverse the change and require minors to obtain parental consent.
However, the PP has recently fallen out with populist party VOX over abortion after the PP backed an amendment to the abortion law that would prevent regions from adopting pro-life policies such as B. Ways for pregnant women to hear the heartbeat of their unborn child.
Mercedes Rodríguez Tamayo, who acts for VOX as a member of the Andalusian regional parliament, later criticized the government, saying: “Women do not need to be protected, we are perfectly qualified to say yes or no to an offer of information. ”
VOX boss Santiago Abascal went even further and launched an attack on the PP ahead of the Spanish local and regional elections scheduled for May, saying: “The PP is the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) 10 years late.”
“I celebrate that there is no more cowardly justice. Now they are directly a centre-left party,” he said.
