2023 Masters Picks, Odds, Field: Surprising PGA predictions from a top-notch golf model that has hit eight majors

Justin Thomas has placed in the top five and one in the top 10 in two of his last three Masters appearances, but won his second major title at the PGA Championship last season. Thomas looked like he could score at last year’s Masters when he made six birdies and just one bogey in the second round. On Sunday, however, he finished with four bogeys and a double bogey. He returns to Augusta National 16-1 according to the latest 2023 Masters odds at Caesars Sportsbook.

Thomas finished just one shot under par last season, level on points with Sungjae Im, who finished runner-up at the 2020 Masters. Im is 33-1, but the 2023 Masters field is filled with past winners and in-form golfers like Scottie Scheffler (10-1), Rory McIlroy (8-1) and favorite Jon Rahm (7-1). SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model has gained over $8,600 on its best bets since the reboot, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model predicted that Rahm would finish at the top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. The model also included JT Poston in his best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet reached +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets brought in nearly $1,100. At last year’s Masters, McClure’s model throughout was Scheffler’s first major championship win of his career heading into the weekend.

Additionally, among McClure’s best bets was Collin Morikawa’s overall win at the 2021 Open Championship, despite being listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also featured throughout Rahm’s (10-1) career first major championship win at the 2021 US Open. Rahm was two strokes away from the lead going into the weekend, but the model still predicted him as the winner.

The same model also nailed a whopping eight majors over the weekend. Everyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 Masters field is taking shape, SportsLine has simulated the tournament 10,000 times and the results have been surprising. Now go to SportsLine to see the projected leaderboard.

Top predictions for the Masters 2023

One big surprise awaiting the model at the 2023 Masters: Cameron Smith, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top favorites at the 2023 Masters, doesn’t even stumble and crack the top 10. Smith is the defending Open champion and claimed late an event in Australia last year but it’s been a rough road for him since then. He finished 47th at his last event in 2022 before missing the cut at his first event in 2023, the only competitive golf he’s played in the past three months.

Despite Smith’s success on the PGA Tour last season, it wasn’t his best year in terms of metrics, which could indicate he was on the right side of luck. He ranked outside the top 100 in driving distance and driving accuracy percentage, while ranking only 136th on the Tour for the important shots he hit from the tee (-.125). With those struggles and just one cut missed for his 2023 events, the model is avoiding Smith at his current Masters 2023 betting odds.

Another surprise: Max Homa, a 22-1 longshot, makes a strong run to the title. He has a much better chance of winning than his odds suggest, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a big payday. Homa has already won twice this season and came close to winning two other events.

Homa nearly fought his way to a win in the Genesis Invitational but found no birdies on his last eight holes and finished just two strokes behind champion Jon Rahm. His putting has been arguably the most impressive part of his game lately and that should make a difference at Augusta National. Homa averaged 2.99 shots at the Genesis Invitational and is fourth overall in putting this season (1.025). See who else you can pick here.

The model also targets four other golfers at odds of 20-1 or better who will make surprise runs to a green jacket. Anyone betting on these longshots could make it big. You can only see the model’s PGA picks here.
